In the past few years, I have been growing in a new direction as a quilter. I write this blog because stitching brings a vibrant joy to my life. I am a wife, mother and now grandmother. I rescue animals and sometimes people. Please feel free to comment or send me notes, I'm delighted to have you visit. Have this winter been long and harsh in your area? Central Oklahoma has been gray and gloomy. I typically enjoy cold weather and snow, however this year has been so gloomy I found myself starting to feel blue. Thankfully sunny days will be returning soon. In 6 months I will whine about the heat. It's a guarantee, LOL.

I have stayed super busy working on rehabbing a house and pushing forward with Bonnie Hunter's 2018 mystery quilt Good Fortune. Units evolved into blocks. Blocks finally became a partial quilt top. Yeah!!

The first border went fine, though I did have a couple of units turned. I sewed the HST's into 2sie's, then into 4sie's. As I went to sew 8sie's I noticed a turned unit. What?!? Oh well, it happens. A little seam ripping, restitch and I was back on track.

I assembled the 2nd border and had a major fit of giggles. Sew a million HST's together and they will fold up and stretch out like an accordion. It tickled me.

I stitched the 1st border to the quilt top. Wahoo! It fit. I was too lazy to measure first. I pinned and got it attached. A little stretch or squish and it was good.

I'm in the homestretch of my Oklahoma quilt. It took forever for me to find a sashing fabric. I looked locally as well as online. Big bomb. Then I saw someone comment about Hancocks of Paducah and that's where I scored! Lovely horse shoes on a warm western brown batik. The multi colors tie in with the colors of my Oklahoma batiks.

I was initially concerned that the horse shoes might be too busy. Thankfully I was wrong. Next to the various blocks it is low volume.

I changed the colors.
Increased the size.
Made the blocks incorrectly.
Skipped the pieced sashing and cut the wrong width of plain sashing.
Added a border that nearly drove me mad.
You see a theme of *ugh* going on here? LOL
I admit I was lost. Physically and most of all emotionally.
Sounds receded. I was numb, yet felt so much.
Firemen who all stopped and shook my hand or touched my shoulder offering sympathy.
Amidst my tears, I saw that night again and knew the name of this quilt.
On The Scene.
My husband is a 31 year veteran police officer. He still works the street.
The vivid colors are his.
The vivid color pops are his normal.
His comfort.
It means the cavalry is there to back him up.
He is not alone.
God and St. Michael are always with him. However, having your fellow officers on a scene too is comforting.
Some days are in the 50's but others ... bbbrrrrr! I love soup both for its delicious comfort and because it will cook while I stitch. Win win!

This weekend I made my favorite sausage cabbage soup. It's my version of cabbage roll soup and stuffed pepper soup. I tweaked it to fit what we want. If you don't make homemade soup, you might consider it this winter. It tastes so much better than the canned stuff.

No green cabbage at the store so I used purple cabbage

I toss some breakfast sausage in a pot to brown and start chopping veggies. An onion, a few carrots and stalks of celery. Minced garlic (or plenty of garlic powder). If I have it, I dice up some green pepper. I usually drain my sausage on paper towels. Then I toss everything back in the pot to sweat the onions and start softening my veggies. I cut a head of cabbage into 1 inch pieces until my pot is full. We love chunky soups. Add a couple of cans of stewed tomatoes, diced tomatoes or tomato sauce. Today I used 2 stewed and 1 tomato sauce. A spoon of italian seasoning, generous spoon of pepper and I put the lid on and walked away.

The sausage adds such a rich scent that I never smell any stink from the cabbage cooking. The tomatoes elevate this to a fancy soup. Later on .... voila! Dinner is ready!
I debated if I really wanted to make the windmill. It's a lot of small pieces and I want them all stitched down snug so the quilt can be washed many times. I'm still new to applique in quilts so humor me please. Or reassure me if you have experience :)
Here is the final block. My other blocks are 12 1/2" unfinished so this was a block and half and needed borders to beef it up to fit into the layout. Clue 1 is now stitched, pressed and waiting.
Clue 2 is about 20% done. I need to make a thousand more neutral/blue HST's.
Clue 3 is almost done. All of the half chevrons are stitched and pressed. I pressed all billion neutral/green HST's though I will need to make a few to compensate for the few that I stitched badly, trimmed poorly, etc. Thank goodness it is only a few.
Clue 4 is cut and waiting. I copped out (according to Bonnie) due to only have a few fabrics available. I'm ok with it :)
Clue 5 .... do we have to discuss clue 5? I promise I will start cutting on it as soon as I'm done writing this blog post.
Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville released the 4th clue for her Good Fortune mystery quilt. String pieced units! Yeah!
Insert my sad face though. I do not have enough fabrics to make decent string pieced blocks. My stash was depleted, so I had to shop to have fabric to make this quilt. Since its a mystery I didn't know to buy a dozen small pieces in this color. I bought 3 and thought that would be more than enough. I was wrong. That's ok. I need an easy week.
How is your week going? I'm delighted to say the snow stayed south of us last weekend. Amen! I do feel sorry for the poor folks in Texas who got 10 inches of snow!! 10 inches!! That's crazy snow for Oklahoma and Texas.

Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville released Clue 3 of this years Mystery Quilt last Friday.
My heart sank.
Half chevrons.
A few years back we made chevrons in Celtic Solstice. I messed lots of them up. LOTS. In the end though I completed the proper number and my daughter uses her quilt. However I vowed to never, ever make chevrons again.

Sighsss I can be so ridiculous. My skills have grown. I have made several quilts since then. Why am I so afraid? They just another unit. Nothing to fear. And this year Bonnie is teaching a method to create little bonus HST's which we are using in this quilt. I hate waste so this is perfect. Now to get over my brain issues, LOL.

My weekend was busy so I worked on Clue 1's 4 patches. I'm proud to say they are all stitched though some still need pressed. Monday I put on my big girl panties and started cutting fabric for Clue 3.

The right side bows out

I think I can. I think I can.

The first unit produced a too small HST. Adjust my tape. I am using my 90's Baby Lock machine and I cannot move the needle over a tick so I am old school adjusting me. I can do this.

Next unit the HST was still a hair small but it can be used. More adjusting. More careful stitching. More pressing. Uh oh. Look at the HST above. Can you see how the right side green bows out? And the black bows down? I'm stretching my fabric as I press. I'm anxious and its showing.

Tuesday and Wednesday brought more success. My half chevrons were becoming dependably correct. My HST's were usually fine as long I pressed gently.
I'm far from completion of Clue 1 or 2. However I'm smiling at the color and sparkle of the fabrics as they start to come together. Tomorrow Clue 3 will be released. Hold on to your hats, it's going to be a fabulous December!
You can join in anytime while it is in progress. It's free and fun. For now. The pattern will be pulled after the new year. I save the clues because I tend to be slow. Bonnie Hunter released her colors and yardage at the end of October. On black Friday she released the first clue. I'm just now working on my colors. Like I said, I'm slow. Well actually I'm indecisive on this one.

I love her mystery quilt alongs. I'm just extra busy this year. My hubby and I bought a lake house that needs rehabbed. We'll be pulling old paneling this coming Friday when Bonnie releases her 2nd clue. Argh! I'll be out of town and without internet.

Each Monday we link up so we can cheer one another on. You can see this weeks link up here.

Bonnie's finished quilt is smaller than what I need. New house needs new quilts right? So I decided it must be bed sized. Rather than making extra blocks like I usually do, I decided to find a focus fabric and add a wide border around the mystery quilt to make it bigger bed sized. And it should go together faster.
Did you notice how I found a way to justify fabric shopping? Hehehe
Black Friday sales encouraged me to make the hour long drive to Joann Fabrics. I'm not a fabric snob. I'll buy decent fabric anywhere. Joann's was having 70% off their quilting fabrics. 70%!!! I got lucky and also finished several bolts which meant those remnants were half off of the sale price! Then there was a coupon for 25% off. I spent just under $150. I saved just under $300. I call that a win.
Tying my colors in with the focus fabric means I deviated from Bonnie's chosen colors. Typical me :)
My fabrics are low density to balance the tiny pieces of the quilt pattern as well as the endless tiny squares of the focus fabric.
Her red becomes my pink.
Her orange becomes my yellows.
The blues and greens are still blues and green but different shades.
My neutral will be blacks.
This is very similar to my colors in Celtic Solstice. That quilt lives on my youngest daughters bed in her home. This one is destined to live at the lake. I may never get this color path in MY house, LOL.

Now to cut and stitch ... I'm excited!
Tornado and teepeeIn summer 2018, in addition to The Road to Oklahoma quilt shop hop, there is a nationwide row along quilt shop hop. It is mainly applique blocks. Not my thing. However my youngest daughter hit a few shops and brought me the patterns. They are Oklahoma themed so I decided to include them. My quilt. My design decisions.

First I made the HOME block which was part of the Road to Oklahoma hop.

Then I got really brave and took pieces from 2 different shops blocks to make this block. It needs more detail before I will call it completed. The tornado is my design. I hand drew my own pattern. I will add some lines to give you the idea of motion happening.
I have another block planned using shop block designs and my own again. It's getting exciting!Heidihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10050209676015138793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7531971875800681864.post-11327987655520749842018-11-14T00:57:00.002-08:002018-11-14T00:57:33.043-08:00Home is where the heart isI'm happily plugging away again at my Oklahoma quilt. I went a week without any sewing. The withdrawal was awful, hehehe.
I pulled in a green fabric that was not part of the Oklahoma collection. It is 2 sided but not a batik. I decided to use it anyway as it reminds me of cow patty stains.

Stitching, pressing and trimming make me so happy!

Yes, I am weird, LOL. In the spring, look at a pale colored cow's rear end and you will find the stains. Dark stains, light stains, in the middle stains. It's real folks :)

The green is playing nicely.

One shop featured an applique block. I'm not overly experienced with applique, however the simple lines encouraged me to make it. I just love that they used a heart as the 'O' in HOME. Then the tiny Oklahoma state outline was the icing on the cake.

The heart was my favorite.

And .... it gets me more experience at applique. Those deer heads on the baby quilt gave me some confidence. I did a simple machine blanket stitch around each shape.

I have a small stack of blocks assembled. I am liking the variety of color and designs, though the worry of running out of fabric is very real. The Oklahoma white is the first one going. I have a small piece left, maybe 4 x 8 inches. So like it or not I am going to dig out some batiks that will hopefully fit in. Cross your fingers for me.

In this block you can see some of the special Oklahoma symbols on the batik. In the navy fabric you can read the word Oklahoma. The golden fabric has arrows as we were Indian territory at one time.

You can see a heart in the this piece of navy. I am trying with each block to pay attention and if there is a half or whole symbol, try to orient that unit(s) all the same way. It makes the block one side up and I'm ok with that.

The teal is circles. The dark gold has feathers, though when it is cut they are less obvious. You can see part of an oil pump jack in this bit of navy.

I will include a few blocks of simple squares, no piecing, to show off the Oklahoma batiks. I really love them!

I had made a personal commitment to make a blog post once a week. I had to replace my laptop and couldn't find my way back to my blog. I feel so silly. Thankfully I found a really old email that had a link and managed to work my way back. Wahoo!!

I have started on a new quilt. My husband drove me around the state this past summer on a quilt shop hop. We had the best time hanging out together. I picked up several block patterns and plenty of fabric.

I planned ahead for this shop hop and saved money. That way when I requested the free block pattern, I could also buy a yard or two of fabric. I wanted to support the wonderful local shops that participated. And wow talk about fun! I had given myself permission to pet the fabrics and take some home!

This years theme was Road to Oklahoma. There were special batik fabrics with Oklahoma symbols. I love them! Each block finishes at 12 inches. And since each shop designs their own block, this is basically a sampler quilt.

Have you ever made a sampler quilt? I had not. I am frustrated that I don't have a long range plan for cutting or sewing. It stresses me to look at the fabric I have available and wonder if I will have enough. On the flip side, I am really enjoying the variety of blocks. If this was just a scrappy quilt it would probably be easier. However I chose the added stress by limiting myself to the Oklahoma fabrics. I'm a goofball :)

My goal is a generous lap quilt. I do not have enough patterns as there were only 23 shops in the hop and I did not make it to them all. So I have gone offroad with a few blocks. We'll see how it goes :)Heidihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10050209676015138793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7531971875800681864.post-986464911526809832018-10-09T00:21:00.002-07:002018-10-09T00:21:36.784-07:00Recovering Dining Chair Seat CushionsHello!
Today I am working on recovering my dining room chair seat cushions. Work in progress :)
It's a simple project. EVERYBODY seems to have done it. Except me.

See how the pleather is peeling. Ugh!

We have an awesome big dining table. It easily seats 8 people on big comfy chairs. It was bought in 2011, so it is only 7 years old. However the chairs are upholstered in .... pleather? They looked like leather. Fake! The top layer of the 'fabric' is peeling. Our oldest granddaughter loves to sit and peel during dinner. So the chairs look pretty bad.
Upholstery fabrics are insanely priced! They were starting about $45 a yard! That does not fit in my budget. I considered denim but it didn't fit with the style of the table. I finally found some acceptable sale fabric online.

I checked a couple of tutorials and dug in.
First step removed the cushion from the chair. Hubby had one off of a chair that broke a leg. I will learn on this 1 cushion.
Second step, remove the staples. All 4 gazillion. Each layer removed showed more staples on the layer underneath. Oh my ....

I started on the staples to remove the atrocious pleather and my hubby said to leave it on to put 1 more layer of something between us and the foam. It felt smooth enough so I agreed. Plus it is less work. There are so very many staples holding the fabric down.

I measured and cut a piece of fabric. Centered the cushion on it. Pulled up the edge, put the staple gun against the surface, squeeze.
Nothing.
Check that the electric stapler is turned on.
Squeeze. Nothing.
Check that the power strip is on.
Squeeze. Nothing.
Now I'm flipping switches like a crazy person.
Check the pressure do hickey on the stapler. Check the cord, power strip and on/off button again.
Squeeze. Bing! Success!
One staple down!
What can I say, I'm gifted, LOL.

I stapled in the center of each side as instructed.
Stapled more moving out to the corner.
Tried to follow the directions to make a smooth corner.
I pondered my endless mistakes. I did great until the calendar changed years then it was one mishap after another. I laugh about it now. At the time I usually sighed and shrugged. I am imperfect so my creations will be as well.
And .... I didn't like the look of my 'blocks'. I laid them out in several different ways trying to find a pleasing configuration. It all hurt my eyes.

My favorite project for new babies is burp cloths. They are such a basic item and the new mothers rave about them. It seems the store bought ones don't really absorb well. They didn't sell burp cloths back when I had babies! You used a cloth diaper or a towel. My grandmother made me 2 from scrap flannel and batting. I loved them, yet never made more. Where was my head? LOL
I have made several sets this year. Once someone has a set and uses them, they want to give a set to their friends. I don't charge. I want my stitching to be done with love. I have also taught others how to make them. They are small, simple quilts meant to be used for everything.

Choosing the patchwork pattern

She really loved some deer head fabric and we found not even a fat quarter, so on the sly I picked up some plain black and white flannel to see if I could get creative. I printed out a few deer head and antler silhouettes and tried creating appliques. Two worked beautifully. One was too thin and a complete mess.

This foot kept everything smooth so I didn't snag the tip of an antler

I used double sided adhesive to attach the antlers and head to the block, then raw edged appliqued them down securely. For extra strength I free motion quilted them. AKA I'm insecure about one tiny line of stitching being enough. I will grow into applique techniques in time :)
I started the year off with an awful bout of the flu and struggled with sinus issues clear thru to May when I finally got antibiotics to clear up an ugly sinus infection. On Ringo Lake designed by Bonnie Hunter made slow progress and it seems I have very few pictures, my blue mood putting me off my usual routine. This summer one son moved from our small town to the city and I spent almost 2 weeks painting his house. Then my other son moved to Colorado which meant a trip to find an apartment then I held down the fort while my husband and a son in law actually moved their furniture and belongings. I paused to complete a dozen other sewing projects. Does everyone get so sidetracked?

My sweet pile of unpressed 9 patches

Bonnie has already released Part 3, however I am just finishing up Part 1. Same reasons as always - I had other stitching items to finish first. This year I had a few formals that needed repair and altering. The last was delivered a few days ago and now I can stitch what I want! Yeah! Party for me!

Bright blue. Vivid red. Black. Silver to gray neutrals.

I went out on my own for colors this year. Bonnie's are lovely but I want something for my room. So blue is happening here as well as vivid red, black and silver to gray neutrals. Pretty simple. Then the really tragic aspect is that this quilt will finish smaller than I need for my king size bed so I will have to add borders, or make more rows and columns to get the size I seek. I'm not sure why I can't simply follow a pattern without going rogue. My bad :)

Part 1 was stitching 9 patches. Thankfully I got them stitched and half are pressed. I plan on starting part 2 tomorrow. Unless life happens. We are eagerly waiting on grandbaby #3 to arrive. He should be here before Christmas. It will be a fabulous delay to welcome a new sweet soul into the family.

Pressed 9 patches

I noticed something today as I pressed 9 patches. Look at the stack. It's fairly neat.

9 patches

See how uniform the 9 patch units appear. Bonnie helped me learn this. I was simply pressing and stacking them. They are already properly sized. As I work on Bonnie's mystery quilts she instructs us on cutting, stitching and pressing. I spent the fall working on a partial quilt top from years ago. It is full of tucks and bobbles. I'm going to finish it rather than discard the lovely fabrics. It will be a testament to how far I have come in my quilting education. Especially now that I can see I have improved and will hopefully continue to get even better.

Thank you Bonnie!! You have taught me so much. I can now cut, stitch and press with amazing (to me) results. I can take scraps of fabric and create a useful item that is also beautiful. I appreciate your devotion to teaching us all aspects of quilting!

En Provence is done! Wahooooo!

It was sent to the local quilt shop to be long arm quilted. It measures 108 inches square. It is a big ol' quilt and heavy. Years ago I tended to think of quilters as the tiny, gray haired grandmothers, basically my grandmother, now I recognize how strong those little ladies were to be making big heavy quilts. I admire their strength. And better understand why they hand quilted on frames. Wrestling this monster under my needle just to bind it was a struggle.
These simple little dresses are quick afternoon project. I made a couple dozen for my girls as they were growing up. If the fabric was plain I would add ribbon trim, fun buttons or fancy stitching. Layer them with T's or turtlenecks and they become a year round wardrobe staple.
He moved out a few weeks ago and realized he preferred place mats over tablecloths to protect his table. Until he priced place mats.

I made a reversible set of 12 from 2 yards of a blue print and 2 yards of a black print. I don't know what this pattern is called but it is very popular right now. The kids have a shower curtain and bath rugs in this same design. The fabric is so busy that I stitched the edge then a simple double rectangle in the middle.

My son is a big fan of the University of Oklahoma so when I spotted some OU cotton fabric at Walmart, I had to buy a couple of yards. For $9.97 a yard! Yikes!

I paired it with the last of a black bandanna print. There was just barely over a yard, so I had to squeeze to get 8 place mats. I made a couple of potholders from the scraps. The kids were delighted. I love having a family that appreciates my sewing :)

I'm pushing forward with my En Provence quilt by Bonnie Hunter. I wish I had hours and hours to wrap it up. One day if I ever have control of my own life .... I love my life and its a fun roller coaster.

I literally spent days trying to decide what to put in the center of the block.
Is my yellow too bright?
Bigger quilt size desired but do I stitch more units to add another row and column of blocks or add a border? What kind of border?
Have I ever mentioned my brain will not shut up? This is why I don't get enough sleep.

I finally decided to put a solid dark purple fabric in the center of my blocks. It was my only purple in the beginning and I had to shop for another. Then I loved the new swirly purple so much I used ONLY that. Silly right? This original purple is sweet and ties in with the theme of lavender fields. See the lavender flowers and butterflies? Check out the lavender fabrics from my stash - purple flowers and butterflies! God knew these fabrics had to go into the same quilt and once I got quiet, there they were :)

Decisions made, I stitched blocks. Added sashing.

Then today I spent the day with a grass fire on the neighboring property. I could see the flames from my yard. I was scared enough to get a hose and start soaking the barnyard. Once the fire crews started to arrive they set up massive water trucks in our farm yard to refill the brush pumper trucks. Over a mile of land burned. We're all safe. Success! My horses will have to stay in the corrals until we can get out this weekend to rebuild the fence the firemen cut to get to the flames. Its a small price to pay for safety. I lost count of the many agencies that responded. County - volunteer firemen are amazing!

Cross your fingers I can get to the borders soon ...

January 1st Bonnie revealed her final clue and the big reveal. More hourglass units! Have you seen her quilt? Go look! * En Provence Mystery Quilt * The clues will be live and free until summer 2017 when Bonnie removes them because the quilt pattern will be published in one of her books. Go save, print or memorize them now! You will regret it if you pass up this opportunity.

I hustled and finished all of Clue 6. Then hustled some more to stitch up Clue 7. I worried about stitching those little bias sides of the Quarter Square Triangle - Hourglass units. I'm a reckless stitcher. I literally ran my hand over my strips before I cut them - stroking them smooth - they clung together and stitched up beautifully! I learn something new and improve my skills every time I do a Bonnie pattern. It makes me feel proud, like getting a gold star in school as a child.

Now to make blocks.

I have not stitched even one block together yet. I have watched all of you lovely quilters boldly create blocks, rows, columns, whole tops and even finished - on the bed amazing! And I'm hanging back trying to decide how MY colors play together to create my best version of Bonnie's design. She will get the credit on the quilt label even if I do alter something; I'm honest and want it recorded properly. No worries there. But how do my fabric choices look best?
The quilt block as Bonnie designed it. You can see my yellow is quite bold. The lavender in the hourglass units almost disappears.
Contestant #2
Putting yellow in the center of the green star. It provides more of a surround for the lavender hourglasses. But that much bold yellow really competes with the purples.
This changes out the yellow corner blocks in the center/main block for purple/neutral half square triangle units. I like how it looks but it would necessitate making more HST's. I do like the yellow centers to the stars. It gives them a touch of a flower look.
Takes all the big bold yellow out of the block. Leaves the possible additions of the purple/neutral HST's. This is a very peaceful look to me. Nothing jarring to the eye.

And I may still audition another tweak. This is play time baby :)

What are you stitching?
Acckkk! I was so happy that I was caught UP TO Clue 6 which is hourglass units. I don't expect to get the whole clue done by the link up which comes a few days after the clue but I like to have some accomplished. I did stitch a few hourglass units on Sunday Jan 1st in an effort to have something done for Monday Link Up, then I got online that evening to find Bonnie had shared the whole tamale earlier that day! Totally forgot that she likes to gift us the big reveal on New Years Day. I'm happy but now I feel like I am behind which is really silly - she only gave us the final clues hours ago. Hours!
This is a lesson to us all - do NOT be your own worst critic. I see many quilters being very harsh about their work. I do it too, just like the 'I'm behind' whine. We need to relax and remember we sew because we love it. I LOVE creating beautiful and useful items. So yeah, be nice to yourself :)

Have you seen Bonnie's new tool? The Essential Triangle Tool. She wrote this pattern to include her ruler and I bet its amazing. At the beginning of the Mystery the rulers were back ordered (manufacturer issue, NOT Bonnie's fault at all) so I figuredI would have to do without it. Blissful ignorance. Fast forward to Clue 6 and hourglass units with green, neutral and lavender. Oh no.

Back at Clue 3, the lavender and purple 4 patches, I lost my mind. Totally. Gone. I cut my strips. But instead of doing the math and cutting half lavender and half purple - I cut enough lavender for ALL the strips. This meant I cut all but a tiny bit of ALL of my lavender stash. My remaining lavender was now in 2 inch strips. Thankfully Clue 6 could use 2 inch strips IF you had one of Bonnie's Essential Triangle Tools. I had a pity party. I figured I was doomed to wait until I could get the tool shipped. Then I studied the hourglass unit and several tutorials on making hourglass units. I looked at Bonnie's Triangle. Hhhhmmm .... its a 90o angle corner .... Tada!

I fashioned my solution. It's imperfect but it will work for now. I stitched an hourglass unit up - amazing! It measured out a tiny bit bigger than 3 1/2 inches. Amen! Did you hear the angels singing?

Quilters are nothing if not creative and inventive. So here's to making do with what I have right now. I'm working on my hourglass units for Clue 6 and will push forward to accomplish 7 then make a real, actual, amazing block. I'm excited!
